Yilan Distillery, with its year-round fragrance of yeast, is like an old friend who walked with the people of Yilan past Qing rule, Japanese rule, until today. Nearly a century of fragrant wines, it can be said that the Yilan Distillery is aging like wine. In the Yilan Distillery, it is as if one enters a tunnel of space and time; the aged and peeling old-style buildings and the meandering pipelines that seem to have gone through much all make one nostalgic for the past.
Wine brewing is an ancient occupation, but over two hundred years ago, the wine production techniques and family-type wine production industries that came with our ancestors from China, did not become formal in scope until the end of Qing rule. The current address of Yilan Distillery was also the place where Yilan literati Lin Qing-yun established the “Yilan Wine Production Company.”“Yilan Wine Production Company,” “Yilan Wine Production Kabu Kaisha,” “Taiwan Province Alcohol and Tobacco Bureau Yilan Distillery,” “Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corporation Yilan Distillery”; with the changing names, we can see the past of Taiwan. In this space of historical atmosphere and trajectories, we can not only see the changes in the production of wine, but can also witness the changes and development in Taiwan. We can remember, reflect, and let our hearts be moved by this place.
From the trademarks in these pictures, full of historical memory, the production history of Yilan Distillery is being told. After the Retrocession, Yilan Distillery also provided local resides many employment opportunities. Many people gave much of their lives to the winery, there are also those who have served the winery for three generations. In their minds, the Yilan Distillery is not just a workplace, but it is more like an old friend that has become a part of their lives.
