The home of Shaohsing wine in Puli
Not until 1988 did Taiwan allow the import of foreign alcohol and cigarettes, which created enormous changes for the wine drinking and consumption habits of Taiwanese people. In the past, under the “monopoly rules,” Taiwan’s cigarette and alcohol market could be said to be a closed market that was production-oriented; whatever the public sale bureau produced, the Taiwanese would drink. However, when Taiwan’s consumers accept various types of foreign cigarettes and wines on the shelves, the rigid public sale system did not follow the changes in the market orientation. In this round of competitions, Shaohsing wine dramatically fell from the top to the bottom. Until 1993, the market for Shaohsing wine shrunk by 80 percent, so that the Puli Brewery, which primarily produces Shaohsing wine, had to be downsized. Thus, the rumors for mergers or moving factories rose up and caused everyone to feel very uneasy.
However, at this most difficult time, Puli Brewery changed its old views and used open hearts to complement the local industry and culture, in the attempt to blend Puli’s honor and personality into its wine. At the time, local cultural work teams proposed the concept of “Puli Brewery does not only belong to the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Company, but also to the people of Puli,” which creates a force that resonates with workers in the winery, which brought changes , and promoted the rebirth of Puli Brewery. The rebirth created powerful effects on the hope of Puli residents which was connected with the self preservation of the winery worker
