History
The distillery was established by Da Zheng Winery, a private sector during the period of Japanese Occupation in 1919. In 1922, the Japanese government had it become a state-run enterprise, which was subject to Taiwan Government General Monopoly Bureau, Taichung branch. After Taiwan was restored to China in 1945, it was renamed as Taiwan Monopoly Bureau, Taichung Branch. The next year it was subordinate to Taiwan Monopoly General Bureau due to separation of production and marketing operation and changed its name to Taichung winery. In January 1947, it was managed by the manufacture company and renamed as the Fifth Brewery Factory. In May 1947, Taiwan Tobacco & Wine Monopoly Bureau took over and changed its name to the Fifth winery. The name of the local district was added to facilitate identification. Thus, it was renamed Taichung winery of Taiwan Tobacco & Wine Monopoly Bureau
in 1957. Along with the changes of urban plans and times, the old winery plant situated in downtown Fu Hsin Road, southern Taichung was moved to the new winery plant in Taichung Industrial Park in July 1998. It was reorganized to a corporation in July 2002 and Taiwan Tobacco & Liquor Corporation has been its formal English name since then.
Factory Park
Located at the foot of Da Du Mountain on the west side of Taichung basin, Taichung Distillery occupies an area of 21.7 hectares. To cope with management demand, the whole factory is divided to cultural landscape district and production green district. All employees are responsible to take care of trees and flowers in all green spaces and parks in their free time. Therefore, garden landscape is everywhere and things like artificial hills, little bridges, waterfalls, carp pond, stone lanterns, pavilions, strange-shaped rocks, lotus pond and flower beds can be seen on each corner. Pine trees, apricot, Calocedrus formosana, camphor trees, Dragon Chinese Juniper, plum trees and cherry trees are planted in every place. Such a delicate and natural scenery honors Taichung Distillery as the most beautiful factory among all national industrial zones. Taichung City Government puts it on the list for scenic spots in Taichung and gives it a name of the ‘Rear Garden of Taichung City.’
It cost Taichung Distillery over 5 million NT dollars to build the Wine Museum, Exhibition Center, brewery workshop and a restaurant. It is uniquely famous as the surrounding landscape is integrated to green spaces, which results in a good place for leisure time. As Yuher Everhealth Chiew was marketed in January 2000, visitors were attracted one after the other and favorable comments took over the island by storm. There are more than 400,000 people visiting the winery, including academic groups, field trips of elementary schools, junior and senior high schools and universities along with the tourists. Vice President Lu, the former Vice President Lien and the former Provincial Governor Soong visited one after another. In April 2003, President Chen Shui-bian also came and hosted the first carnival festival of Taichung Industrial Park. President Chen kept on praising after a tour around the winery. Three treasures of a ‘perfect wonderland,’ ‘mellow wine’ and ‘delicacies’ bring infinite business opportunities and hope to Taichung Distillery.
